Strathcona County is holding several new events and enhancing current ones in recognition of Canada’s 150th birthday.
“Everything we do in 2017 to celebrate Canada’s 150, we will be looking to achieve one over-arching goal, and that is to create opportunities for Canadians in Strathcona County to participate in celebrations that contribute to a sense of global and national pride,” said Carmen Herbers, director of communications with the county, during a presentation to council on March 14.
Gallery @501 will be showcasing five events throughout the year, including a photography exhibition and speaking engagement by Dr. Roberta Bondar, who was the first female astronaut, in November.
Historian and author Ted Barris will be speaking at Festival Place on March 24 in recognition of the 100th anniversary of Canada’s participation in the battle of Vimy Ridge.
The Canada Day festival will be enhanced with a variety of events and activities, including a fly-by, courtesty of the Canadian Air Forces, performances and fireworks.
A Chautauqua Tent will be situated in Broadmoor Lake Park, where the county will host storytelling, heritage crafts, performers, and various other activities for two weeks in August.
The county’s New Years Eve celebrations will be highlighting Canada’s 150th birthday through fireworks, snow sculptures and staging.
More celebrations for Canada’s 150th birthday will be featured in several other county-run events throughout the year.
